The Terminal Generation
Although Jesus made it clear the date for His return is in the Father’s authority, people nevertheless try to set dates. They are always wrong, too.
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning— lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!” Mark 13:32-37
God the Father is in control. He makes the call to send His Son back, and this time, as conqueror.
The signs of the end times are notices to us that the time is approaching. We can be aware of the season, but not the exact day.
But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-5
The recent stir around the blood moons has led some to set dates for Jesus return especially with these blood moons occurring on important Jewish feast days. Mark Biltz book, Blood Moons, does an exemplary job explaining the significance of the feast days.
It would be so easy to take this information and build a date for Jesus return. Many have done it, and many will continue to do so. When these date-setters fail, they invite the end time scoffing of which Peter warned:
knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 2 Peter 3:3-4
Jude reiterates:
But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. Jude 1:17-18
Here’s the deal; God can and will do anything He wants. He’s bound to nothing. He can interrupt schedules, patterns, and disrupt expectations. He can do anything He wants, and He can do it when He wants.
In Joshua 10:13-14, God held the sun and the moon remained in place for 24 hours. In 2 Kings 20:9-11 God reversed time. He can do anything He wants, when He wants.
When Jesus was on the cross, darkness fell for three hours. This doesn’t fit the pattern—it was a disruption. Jesus died in the middle of the month of the Biblical calendar, and solar eclipses only occur at the beginning of a Biblical month. Solar eclipses don’t last three hours either. God disrupted the pattern.
Date setters look for patterns. What a waste of time.
The Bible does tell us exactly when Jesus is returning. Our attention should focus on Israel. Jerusalem contains the foundation stone with a ticking clock.
For the Lord shall build up Zion;
He shall appear in His glory.
He shall regard the prayer of the destitute,
And shall not despise their prayer.This will be written for the generation to come,
That a people yet to be created may praise the Lord.Psalm 102:16-18
The phrase “generation to come” means terminal generation which is the last generation. Israel, and especially Jerusalem, are signs to watch. It’s not about the date—it’s about the season.
