Asteroids: Wonders in Heaven and Signs in the Earth

The recent asteroid and meteors that assaulted the earth have a lot of people talking. Are these signs of the end? Yes, simply because the Bible says so.

I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. Acts 2:19

And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. Luke 21:11

The recent meteorite that struck in Russia causing damage and injuring over 1,000 people, and the meteors that brightened the skies over San Francisco, California and the nation of Cuba all on the same day certainly raised fears for human vulnerability to what can fall out of the sky.

These are absolute signs and they serve their purpose if they cause people to turn their lives and safety to God. That usually doesn’t happen on a big scale, at least not for long.

The fear factor enters in now that the Russians are talking about a strategic missile defense system to strike asteroids targeted for an earth collision. If nothing else, these signs, or instances, or near-misses, or whatever you want to call them; these are making people realize they are vulnerable. We have other signs of vulnerability where we are at the hands of so called “acts of nature”—and it seems more of them are happening recently. Earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, and add to the list falling rock.

The Book of Revelation has a steroidal list of natural calamities:

I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place. And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?” Revelation 6:12-17

And this one definitely looks like an asteroid hitting the earth;

Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. Revelation 8:8-9

The signs of increased earthquakes both in number and power, cosmic disturbances including sun flares, solar storms, asteroids and meteors, and weather related disasters are all signs. These are signs of the earth travailing in labor and in discomfort as the covenant is pressed upon from the depravity of sin and mankind’s supernatural dance with darkness.

But the earth also travails for light, for the manifestation of the children of God, the church without spot or wrinkle, who will rise in the last days.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. Romans 8:18-23

We are in that pre-tribulation time, the time Jesus called sorrows. A difficult time, but a time of signs and wonders to draw us closer to God. Ever since the Tower of Babel humanity has striven, with Satan’s motivation, to find its own path and solve its problems apart from a heavenly Father. Humanity covenants with itself as if it were god to bring control and order.
