Dozens Injured as Tornado Wreaks Havoc in Portugal's Algarve

LISBON -- The Civil Protection Authority reported that the strong winds generated by a tornado ripped through Lagoa town on Friday afternoon, leaving 12 people injured, two of whom are believed to be in critical condition. The twister also caused extensive damage to vehicles and trees in Lagoa as well as the tourist towns of Carvoeiro and Silves. The Lusa news agency was informed by the chief of firefighters in Silves that 50% of the town was destroyed when the tornado touched down in the Algarve region. The tornado left a trail of devastation, with vehicles flipped over, roofs ripped off, windows shattered, trees uprooted and traffic lights damaged. An officer with the Civil Protection confirmed that some serious injuries were reported, including motorists who had to be pulled out from their vehicles. So far, no deaths have been confirmed but among the injured, two in serious condition had to be rushed to hospitals in Faro and Portimao. ubAlert
