8 Killed, Thousands Displaced by Flash Floods in Sri Lanka

Local officials said eight people were killed while thousands more have been displaced by flash floods that were caused by torrential rains in Sri Lanka. According to Lal Sarath Kumara, the assistant director of the Disaster Management Centre, they recorded eight fatalities due to the incessant rains that lashed the island nation over the past five days. Kumara said the deaths were caused by drowning and lightning strikes. Officials said districts located in the southeast and central south of Sri Lanka were affected by the heavy rains, with the district of Matara being the hardest hit. They added that a number of roads in the central hill districts are still impassable because of landslides triggered by the heavy rainfall. ubAlert

Panama Declares State of Disaster in 3 Areas Due to Flash Floods, Landslides

Authorities said three areas have been placed under a state of disaster after two people died in landslides that were triggered by incessant rain. The hardest-hit areas were the province of Colon and the area of Capira, where two people were buried alive by a landslide. President Ricardo Martinelli visited the areas and declared Colon, Capira and Chorrera disaster areas to speed up emergency operations. In the municipality of Chorrera, rivers overflowed, houses were submerged to the roof and shops were inundated. No less than 800 houses were damaged and 94 people were evacuated by rescue workers. According to Guillermo Ferrufino, the minister for social development and a resident in the area for 38 years, the death toll may rise further as authorities start to gain access to areas which have been isolated by the heavy downpours. ubAlert
