India: Biometric ration cards from today

CHIKMAGALUR: The department of food, civil supplies and consumer affairs will take up the issual of photo-biometric ration cards for BPL and APL card holders in the district from Monday and first machine will be operated at Seethur society in Narasimharajapura taluk.

Disclosing it to the TOI, the food and civil supplies minister and district minister D N Jeevaraj said that in the second phase the department has selected another five districts to introduce point-of-sale machines. It will be introduced in Chikmagalur, Raichur, Belgaum, Dharwad and Mysore districts.

Food grains will be weighed on the electronic weighing machine. The machine which has a voice system will tell the customer the weight of the grocery, and also the amount to be after it authenticates the biometric details of the ration card holder.

He said, the department took Tumkur district as a pilot district to introduce this machine and was successful in its efforts.  TimesOfIndia
