My Twitter Abortion Debate

12/11/2010 08:58

We all know that abortion has been a hotly debated subject in the United States for nearly 40-years, and I guess I was struck by surprise with my recent encounter with a pro-abortion advocate. What surprised me was her message—it was the exact same message from the early 1970’s! She talked about her concern for women resorting to back-alley abortion procedures and coat hangers. I would describe this advocate as being in her early 20’s. When I suggested to her that her debate was the same message from the 70’s she ignored my comment. Her message seemed the same as the pro-abortion rally cry when abortion was illegal in the United States. I finally asked her, “Julie, isn’t abortion legal?” She admitted it was, but said it wasn’t yet accessible for all. This whole debate between her and me was done with tweets through Twitter.

I thought about asking her what “better access” meant to her. Did she intend that every woman who had an unwanted pregnancy should visit some sort of drive through abortion clinic, or did she mean that better access would be the abortionist doctor coming to the woman’s home? But, before we could go on, I had to attend other things, and by the time I returned to our abortion tweet debate a few hours later, I could tell she was already distracted with some new debates raging at her fingertips, so our conversation waned and died.

I have to admit upfront that abortion is not something that I often talk about, because I don’t have to. It seems the people in my near circle are of he same mind as me—we value life and strongly believe that abortion is wrong. So, since I don’t discuss it much, I felt a little rusty with the debate. I did some quick research and basically what I discovered is that the debate barrage really hasn’t changed much over all these years. Some new developments have enlivened the debate some such as babies being born earlier with success, the smiling 17-week unborn baby, and that whole thing about late-term abortions really has people upset. But honestly, I’m not an expert on this subject and I gladly let those who know it better take the lead. I did get Prophecy Dude Junior’s advice and used it. I said something like this to my Tweet pro-abortion person:  “Julie, I’m thankful, and I know you are too, that your mom chose not to take the path of abortion with you.”  She shamelessly replied, “I’m thankful that she had the freedom to choose.” That’s when I simply told her that there was one thing for sure we could agree on, and that is that neither one of us will change our positions. She didn’t respond to that. She was wasting her time with me for sure, and I probably was with her as well, but I did pray for her, an earnest, sincere prayer; and I told her so. She didn’t respond to that either.

For the pro-abortion people out there (I know they prefer to be called pro-choice), don’t bother to respond to this with the hope or challenge to change my mind. Even though I admit I can’t debate it very well, I know what I believe and no one is going to change that. I believe abortion is murder. When I used that on Julie, she told me to look up the word “abortion;” it doesn’t mean murder. She was right, technically. That’s why I know I’m not good with this debate. They have their responses rehearsed.

But, I will tell you what I do know. I submit, I gladly submit, myself to a higher authority—even bigger than man. God never changes, and God values life. They call it a fetus to disengage any suggestion of life by using that clinical term, but God calls that “fetus” a baby.

We know according to 1 Thessalonians 5:23, we are created spirit, soul, and body. When do the spirit and soul enter to begin life? Look at what God’s Word says:

Psalm 139:12-16 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.

To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
   Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.

Jeremiah 1:5 “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.
Before you were born I set you apart
and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”

Out of these scriptures from the Bible, we can see not only is God involved in the formation of the baby, He actually knows us before we are even formed in the womb. That leaves no question that a baby is more than a mere fetus. A baby is designed by God, even before formation. God even knows the sex and name of the child before conception! Look at these:

Genesis 17:19 But God replied, “No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant.

Judges 13:2,3,24  In those days a man named Manoah from the tribe of Dan lived in the town of Zorah. His wife was unable to become pregnant, and they had no children.  The angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah’s wife and said, “Even though you have been unable to have children, you will soon become pregnant and give birth to a son. When her son was born, she named him Samson. And the Lord blessed him as he grew up.

Luke 1:13 But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a son, and you are to name him John.

Matthew 1:21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

1 Kings 13:2 shows us that hundreds of years before his birth, Josiah was named and Isaiah 44:28 named Cyrus and declared him King of Persia—140 years before he was even born! Babies are not just clinical fetus’s—they have spirit and souls at conception.

It goes further than that, though. In Luke 1:15, we see that John was filled with the spirit before he was even born—yes, while yet a mere “fetus.” In these scriptures noted in this writing and throughout the Bible, a mother is called a mother and a baby is called a baby before the baby is born.

Exodus 21:22-25 lists penalties for wounding a pregnant woman even exacting the death penalty for causing harm to the unborn baby. This reminds me of the Unborn Victims of Violence Act where 34 states recognize that a child in utero is a legal victim in a crime that causes it harm. I’m thankful for this law, but it’s crazy that even though this law recognizes the rights of an unborn baby, abortion is still legal!

Here’s the scary part to me. There have been 53 million abortions since Roe v. Wade was passed in the United States in 1973.  No matter how Julie and the other pro-abortionists define “abortion,” I still call it murder. Here’s the real scary part—the Bible says in Proverbs 6:16-17 that the Lord hates and detests hands that kill the innocent.

Abortion, its acceptance and increase, is a sign of the end times. People, and a nation who approve and perform abortion, which is murdering the innocent, cannot escape judgment.
