Pelosi Plans Vote on So-Called Nondiscrimination Bill

Pelosi plans to schedule a vote on the controversial Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

Under the guise of workplace fairness, the measure would provide special protections for employees based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

Pelosi, who will be running for minority leader next year, did not announce a date for the ENDA vote; however, it would be before the end of the year when Democrats still have the votes to pass it.

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., one of four gay-identified members of Congress, was pessimistic about passing the bill.

During an interview with the Washington Blade, a gay-activist newspaper, he said:

Blade: What about ENDA? He did say they would try to move ENDA.

Frank: There is zero chance of them doing anything on ENDA (next year) – zero.

When asked his predictions on the pro-gay agenda during the 112th Congress:

Frank: It will be a status quo. The one thing we have a chance for is ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal in this lame duck session. And we can get that if we get any Republican cooperation. … On the other hand, they don’t have the votes to hurt us but we don’t have the votes to advance anything in the cause.

Jeff Johnston, social policy analyst with CitizenLink, said similar legislation that is being pushed on both state and local can be costly and damaging on many levels.

“The unintended consequences are great. Religious liberty and freedom of conscience are trampled on at the expense of ideology,” Johnston said. “If this law is passed, business owners, churches and religious groups could be forced to comply with this gender confusion – at the expense of their faith.”
