Prolonged Drought in Queensland May Prompt Mass Evacuation

Australia Severe // Drought
BRISBANE -- Authorities said that after two years without any rainfall, a town in Queensland is contemplating the possibility of evacuating its entire population as water supply continues to dwindle. The mayor of Cloncurry said the evacuation of its 3,000 residents would be the worst case scenario. However, such action is already a part of an emergency plan currently being developed to address the shortage in water supplies. Mayor Andrew Daniels reported that people in his community are now facing the toughest water restrictions, as domestic consumption has been limited to the bare essentials of cooking and bathing. He added that the next step involves boring for water, which means people will have to boil water to drink. On Wednesday, the mayor said he had met with representatives from the federal government who were working on a White Paper for the development of the northern region of the country. In 2008, Cloncurry was forced to transport water by rail from Mt. Isa, but that is no longer an option today because in spite of the recent rain in Mt. Isa, the mining city is also mulling evacuation as its last resort. UBAlert
