Rabbi Sent to Portugal to Seek "Marrano Jews"

The Shavei Israel organization has sent Rabbi Elisha Salas to northern Portugal to assist fellow "hidden Jews" who were forced to convert to Christianity and are now seeking to reestablish their roots. Known as "marranos", Bnei Anusim, or "crypo-Jews", they are decedents of Jewish victims of the Spanish Inquisition.
Rabbi Elisha Salas was born in Chile and has been living in Israel since 1999.
