Sizing Up God at a Florida Courthouse

Ladies, let me tell you a secret about men. They size each other up. That glance they give other men in passing? It’s all about sizing one another up. Men, no matter how confident they try to appear, have just enough insecurity they compare themselves, their skills, their looks, whatever, with other men.

This all goes back to the innate behavior to protect and expand territory.  God put that in men and since we are created in His image and likeness, it must be the nature of God. He is about expanding His kingdom and that started with His expectation of Adam and Eve to dominate and spread God’s kingdom.  Jesus gave the same walking papers to His disciples.

Satan also sizes God up. He is the evil that God created, even if he didn’t begin with a purpose of evil—he transformed himself into it when he started sizing God up.

“How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
For you have said in your heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’  Isaiah 14:12-14

Assuming the image of God was an act of robbery for Satan. God opposed that act by giving that image to His Son.

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:5-8

What Satan robbed through pride, God gave to His Son through His act of utter humility. Then Paul profoundly and boldly says that this same mind of humility needs to be in us. Humility is the evaporation of the concern for reputation; it is the portal into the kingdom of God. When Satan sized up God, he failed to see His heart and instead went for the glitter which is the limit of pride’s view. Humility is a color of God impossible for pride to detect.

Satan is forever bound to his pride. He still sizes God up and still thinks he can take God on. What a fool. Humility is opposed to pride.

So, in his response to sizing God up, he’s tried to show God up with a monument—right next to one that represents God.  Motivated by pride, atheists have erected their own monument to oppose that which represents God.

Something similar happened in 1 Samuel 5. Instead of the atheist’s monument there was the statue of the Philistine fertility god Dagon in opposition to the Ark of the Covenant, which contained the Ten Commandments. The Floridian atheists placed their monument in opposition to the Ten Commandments monument on a Courthouse lawn. Dagon and the Ark were also side by side.

The Philistines had captured the Ark of the Covenant, and carried it into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. Satan sought to size God up with the opposing monuments. Early the next day they found Dagon flat on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord. They put Dagon back but the following morning Dagon was again on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord, but this time his head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold away from his body.

The Philistine god Dagon was humiliated. If that wasn’t enough, the people who worshiped Dagon were further humiliated with an affliction of hemorrhoids. Can you think of anything much more humiliating than a bad case of hemorrhoids? They begged the Hebrews to take their Ark back. God of creation showed these people humility as a path to Him. Pride never leads one to God, but instead it is the color of Satan.

I’m anticipating the atheist’s Dagon to fall before God’s Ten Commandments. Can you imagine what a stir that would cause? What would a powerful burning itch in the right place do to a group of atheists who oppose God?  Perhaps they might find the path of humility to God through such an experience.
