Study: Half of Sexually Active Men May Have HPV

A study of Human Papilloma Virus [1] (HPV) prevalence in men was published in the early online March 1, 2011 publication The Lancet [2], which found that half of the 1,159 sexually active men  studied (ages 18—70 years) tested positive for the presence of HPV.

This study supports data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) [3], reporting:

At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection

Approximately 20 million Americans are currently infected with HPV

Another 6.2 million people become newly infected each year

The HPV vaccine drug,Gardasil was designed to prevent infection by four common HPV strains (6,11, 16, 18) – out of the thirteen most dangerous strains [3] of HPV. Approximately 40 different strains [4] of genital HPV exist.

Research consistently finds a link between HPV infection and increased numbers of sexual partners.

In a  larger study [5], Dr. Anna R. Giuliano found that heterosexual men having more than three lifetime, female sexual partners had the greatest impact on HPV prevalence. The same applies to men who have sex with men (MSM) and the bisexual population.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) also notes the risk for anal cancer [HPV-induced] is 17 times higher [6] among gay and bisexual men than among heterosexual men.

Although the study in The Lancet [2] and Dr. Giuliano urge men to be vaccinated, the efficacy of Gardasil in male populations [7] has yet to be fully proven.

In a previous study [8] – partially funded by Merck, manufacturer of Gardasil – Dr. Giuliano’s conclusion: “Quadrivalent HPV vaccine prevents infection,” did not necessarily match up with the results. The vaccine trial with 4,065 young men  did not indicate efficacy of the vaccine in “preventing” all HPV infections.

The costs and benefits of HPV vaccination [9] must be carefully weighed by parents and/or young men and women. Be fully informed and review the CDC HPV Vaccine Safety site [10].

HPV is often asymptomatic in men [1] (exceptions: genital warts; MSM/bisexual anal warts), so men can unknowingly infect multiple partners [11]. Nonmarital, sexually active women should have frequent PAP tests to detect HPV-induced cervical cancer at the earliest stage possible. Most cervical cancers can be surgically removed.

By far, the best choice is to avoid sexual activity outside of a monogamous, lifelong, committed marriage. Multiple partners will likely lead to multiple infections. If half are infected, is it really worth the risk?
