The Mark of The Beast’s Identity Crisis

There are some interesting things about the mark of the beast.

He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Revelation 13:16-18

Why does the Antichrist demand everyone take the mark? The reason given is to enable the people of earth to make purchases. In these last days, people are motivated and inspired by money. No money no eat. It’s not only a matter of survival, but it’s the path to upper mobility and wealth.

Maybe the Antichrist is a crazed despot who wants to monitor and control everything everyone does. Maybe a world-wide economic depression has collapsed wealth for mandated food rationing.

Then maybe it’s just a good idea that everyone readily buys into.

Have you ever had your identity stolen and your bank account hit? It can be a minor infraction readily caught by your loyal credit card company. Any weird activity and they shut your account down and alert you. Many people have had worse done, and the recent credit card hacking with Target and Neiman Marcus and other retailers has brought the spotlight back on identity theft.

European countries have built in extra layers of credit card protection that the United States hasn’t instituted. News reports estimate the cost to American retail industry would be $8 billion to install the added protection. The suggested approach is to begin to force companies to replace their credit card scanners for the ones that allow the more secure credit cards.

People will demand the change—especially those who fear not only the theft of their wealth but who respect the stress and cost to restore their damaged credit rating. Its hard work—and often costly.

But, it seems that it doesn’t matter how many cyber-security fences are built, some 17 year old scales it. It’s like the ultimate video game for them.

Some articles here show the progress towards identification protection. How do you make sure that the person representing the wealth is really the owner of that wealth? You have to make the identification device as much like the person as possible. That’s where biometrics enters the scene.

Biometrics uses biological markers, unique human identifiers, so far unreproducible, to tag rightful owners to their possessions.

I have a friend who coon hunts. Hmm, I better qualify that for our non-redneck readers. I have a friend who engages in the sport of raccoon hunting. The sport is characterized by the use of trained hounds who tree raccoons and alert their owner with a distinct bark. In the old days this sport was about food, but now it’s about technology.

The dogs are equipped with GPS collars so hunters can identify the location of their dogs with their smartphones. Not too many years ago, this sport had the risk of losing valuable dogs where hunting the dog may have taken more time than hunting the raccoon.

The adaption of technology for identification purposes is making it into every part of our lives. We are accepting it readily. We chip our dogs so we can find them. Will we chip our children too? What will it take to cross that line?

So, maybe acceptance of Revelation’s mark is more about security—or at least that is what humanity will believe. Could there be more to it? Absolutely!
