When is the Day of Vengeance?

06/14/2014 20:01

A day of vengeance is coming.

Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” Acts 17:30-31

Jesus shows us when it takes place in the manner He quotes Isaiah:

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.  And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. Luke 4:16-20

But He didn’t quite quote all of it. He left off this:

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;  Isaiah 61:2

Jesus sat down to indicate He, His ministry, would be finished on earth before vengeance arrives. He clearly demonstrated that His earthly ministry would end before judgment would begin. I believe His earthly ministry includes His ministry through the church, His body, His bride.

Jesus drew a strong line. His message brought division and not peace.

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.  For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.  And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.  He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. Matthew 10:34-39

There is one who comes who will bring peace and restoration to divided families, and he’s coming just before the Day of Vengeance.

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet
Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
And he will turn
The hearts of the fathers to the children,
And the hearts of the children to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.” Malachi 4:5-6

They were looking for Elijah when Jesus came. Jesus didn’t fit the bill because He caused division.

“Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”  Matthew 16:12-16

The time of vengeance comes after Jesus and the church age. He showed us that. It comes right after Elijah. Elijah didn’t die, but was caught up in a fiery whirlwind so he could come back and may well be one of the two witnesses of the Tribulation Period.

And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.” Revelation 11:3

The Day of Vengeance is reserved for the Tribulation, a seven-year period of time that serves to bring Israel’s heart back to God.

For it is the day of the Lord’s vengeance,
The year of recompense for the cause of Zion. Isaiah 34:8

“And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. Zechariah 12:10

When the veil is removed from the face of the Jewish nation, they will see Christ for who He is—their eternal savior. At that time the hearts of these children will be restored to their Father.
